    Acupuncture
    Acupuncture is a treatment modality, which is applied with needles on different points of the body skin. These points, which are distributed through out the body are called meridians, and are channels of acupuncture. When we use this treatment in medicine, the doctor is using this modality as integral method as to diagnose and treatment along with conventional medicine.



    What is the origin of acupuncture?
    According to known documentation, acupuncture has its origin in China over a thousand year B.C. During the end of the XIX century and beginning the XX century acupuncture was introduced to countries such as Europe, France and England. It has since been practice medicine. This modality of treatment becomes known in the USA and Puerto Rico in the early 1970s.


    How does acupuncture function?
    Following the theory of Asian (oriental) medicine, acupuncture promotes health and the healing of illnesses by stimulating the different points (meridians) previously mentioned. Theses points regulate the flow of vital energy, which the Chinese call “chi”. With the correct selection of the appropriate meridian sstimulated with the needles these points proper healing mechanism. During the half of the XX century the development of western scientific medicine has allowed these theories to expand.

    As we explain earlier the effect of acupuncture, we could also understand a lot of the effect in which this mechanism is known to western medicine. We know that by stimulating the acupuncture points the will produce substance such as endorphins, which play an important role in minimizing the reaction to pain. On the other hand other substances have the ability to minimize inflammation and stimulate tissue repair. Other mechanisms that acupuncture affect include muscular relaxation and help unblock unhealthy impulses along the nerves system.



    Are the effects of acupuncture permanent?
    This depends on the patient constitutions and their particular health issues among other factors, which are prevalent. A lot of patients resolve their health problems with acupuncture, and are able to identified and modified factors, which promotes permanent positives effects. Others patients require periodical acupuncture treatments in order to received the benefits of the treatments. The decision to continue or to stop treatments is one that is decided between patients and the acupuncture doctor.



    Is acupuncture painful or dangerous?
    Usually acupuncture treatment is not painful. The needles are so fine and are introduce on the surface of the skin, utilizing techniques, which minimize the discomfort to the patient. It is a reasonable safe procedure. However, there have being reports of some complications, most of this have been few. Occasionally, a hematoma (black and blue) may appear at the point where the needle has been applied, after a few days of treatment. Some times, where the needles has been remove there may been some minimal bleeding, which can been stopped by applying pressure immediately.



    What health issues can be treated with acupuncture?
    The medical system in oriental countries utilized acupuncture as a treatment modality for nearly all-medical illnesses, in combination nutrition, massage, and herb logy. In the West, where this practices is predominant, this type of medicine is call allopathic (the conventional medicine), acupuncture has been use in illness where it has been most effective along scientific studies. Some of these illnesses included the following: back pain due to different reasons, tissue and muscular skeletal pain and past surgical pain.
